MMMMMM Toody's MMMMMMMM

I stopped by my favorite sub shop/restaurant yesterday for a quick "snack" to feed my ever growing intestinal tapeworm. It had been a while since I had been to Toody's in Wakefield. For various reasons I just haven't been eating at Toody's of late.

For various reasons I haven't been eating out anywhere for that matter! Yesterday though I resolved that this must and will of course change for a couple of reasons. First, Toody's now has pizza and it is DAMN GOOD pizza. Now I have known about the pizza for a while. I have dined on more than a few of them as well, but I am just getting around to writing about it. Only complaint I have about Toody's Pizza is, is that they don't deliver. Petty I know, but the pizza is DAMN good. My favorite your ask? Pepperoni, Mushroom, Garlic and Sausage with extra cheese.

Second reason Toody's now serves Beer and Wine..I have no idea what the prices are for a class of wine or a bottle of beer.To be honest I didn't look, but I strongly suspect it is very reasonable. Having a beer with your pizza is as American as having a glass wine with your pasta. More importantly though and with all sincerity, Congrats to Toody's on securing the Beer and Wine License. This is a very very BIG STEP. Toody's can no longer be considered a little place that invented the SUBMARINE SANDWHICH. Toody's is now a full fledged restaurant!

UPDATE!!!! 7-24-08

I stopped by Toody's AGAIN, to inhale some wonderful food and I noticed a very classy 50 inch or so looking PLASMA TV hanging on the wall for people to enjoy while eating. NICE TOUCH!! Anyway in the above post I mentioned the Toody's now has Beer and Wine but I wasn't sure on the cost. While at Toody's I checked! Beer runs between $3.50 and $5.00 a bottle depending on the brand, import vs domestic. Wine runs $6.50 per glass. All appear to be top shelf brands. Just an FYI.

Well the surprises keep coming at Toody's!!

I didn't catch this the other day but Toody's is now serving some delicious breakfast items such as Croissants or Bagels with your choice of Cheese, Bacon, Ham or Sausage or English Muffins with the same choices.

Today I was on my way back from the Post Office and I noticed the sign at Toody's saying breakfast was now being served. So I pulled my gas guzzling Hummer into the parking lot and went in and I dined on an English muffin with Egg, Sausage and for good measure a couple pieces of bacon,* and I gotta tell you it was damn GOOD. AFFORDABLE TOO!! Why anyone in the world would even THINK about going to Dunkin Donuts for the crap they serve is beyond me. Do yourself a favor and try Toody's breakfast items. You won't be disappointed.

A generous assortment of Donuts (mmmmm donuts mmmmm) and muffins are also on the menu for those wanting a lighter choice along with good coffee and juice.

*I gotta agree with WRKO AM 680 Evening drive host and Boston Herald Columnist Howie Carr EVERYTHING tastes better with bacon on it.

Don't Be a Stupid Illiterate VAGINA

Few things in life PISS me off more than stupid VAGINA'S who can't read and have ZERO COMMON SENSE. Case in point.. The other day I had to run into Target for two items. I quickly locate the two items and proceed to the checkout counter. In typical fashion for that time of day at Target they only have 2 regular checkout lanes open and of course one lane for those shoppers with 10 items or less. Which seems to be adequate staffing based on the number of customers in the store. Of course this was the line I proceeded too.

I am most eager to get in and out as fast as I can. I have things to do today and standing in line is not one of them. Hence I am grateful that Target has a 10 item or less checkout to speed me on my way. Or so I thought.

As I step up to the 10 item line I notice there is a 35 to 40 year old woman with her snot nosed 9 or 10 year old son in tow. This little monster is of course fingering every item around the checkout counter that he can get his grubby little paws on. The only saving grace about the little bastard was that he was quite. Why this little hellion isn't in school at this time is another mystery that I won't explore at this time.

While I am patiently waiting for my chance to check out, it dawns on me that my wait seems to be taking much longer than it should for a 10 item or less register. As I peer around the woman in front of me's rather large backside I notice that low and behold this stupid illiterate VAGINA in front of me has close to 30 items to be checked out in the 10 item or less line. To make matters worse she is tossing some items aside claiming she "doesn't want them.." Trust me she didn't toss enough of her 30 items to get the number down to ten either. Tick tock...Tick tock.

Several minutes pass and little progress is being made. To further compound the issue the cashier who is also a stupid illiterate VAGINA, obviously doesn't have the balls or the brains to tell the other stupid illiterate VAGINA that her line is reserved for those customers with 10 items or less. So I am now stuck behind this twit because other customers have also joined the line at the 10 item or less register. Trying to make a dash for one of the other regular registers doesn't seem to be a viable option either or I would have made the break for it. A quick glance at the customers lining up behind me show that all have the required 10 items or less. At least some people can read.

As more time passed waiting, you could feel the anger in the air from the other customers and myself at this point. No one said anything but it was clear people were not happy with what was going on. Long audible sighs and a well timed throat clearing or two from some of the other customers fell on deaf ears. The cashier and the customer in question seemed to be oblivious to the issue which made the situation even more frustrating. The cashier was doing her part to make sure things progressed slowly by engaging this customer in droning "chit chat" as well. Meanwhile the rest of us are stuck.

As I was standing in line all I could think about was, "What is so hard about the concept that a checkout line with a sign that clearly reads 10 items or less is to only be used by those customers who have 10 items or less?" Simple logic says it isn't hard unless of course you are a stupid illiterate VAGINA.

I should have called for a manager and raised HOLY HELL but I didn't. My blood pressure was redlining by the time I got checked out and to be honest I was afraid of what I might say. It is important when complaining in person to sound calm and rational and at this time I was neither. I will however curtail my shopping at Target and when I do avoid that cashier's lane.

Moral of the story if you have a vagina, don't be a stupid illiterate VAGINA. If you have a penis, don't be a stupid illiterate penis.

Illegal Alien Rape Suspect Forced To Wear Bizarre Mask After Outburst In Court

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- First, a homeless child rape suspect turned violent in a Seminole County courtroom. Then he was forced to wear a mask on his face to keep him from spitting, before the jury returned a guilty verdict late Thursday afternoon.
Antonio Rosales is accused of raping a 10-year-old girl. Before court could even begin Thursday, a judge had to decide if Rosales was competent to stand trial after a violent outburst Wednesday.

After a brief hearing Thursday, Rosales told a judge he wanted to be left out of the courtroom because he said he might lash out again. Initially, a team of deputies brought 41-year-old Antonio Rosales into the courtroom wearing a bizarre mesh head-covering and a mask. Authorities said they put it on him after he threatened to spit at people.

It was the second strange scene in two days. Wednesday afternoon, Rosales erupted in the courtroom as prosecutor Anna Valentini made her closing argument.

The illegal immigrant from Guatemala is on trial for the attempted murder and sexual battery of a 10-year-old girl in Casselberry in 2003. A court appointed doctor said Rosales was insulted by the allegation he's a child molester. "This is someone who told me that was he is insulted," court-appointed doctor Jeffrey Danziger said.

Despite the outburst, the judge found Rosales competent to continue his trial. During that hearing, extra deputies surrounded Rosales, who promised to behave. But, before the jury returned, Rosales asked to stay out of the courtroom so he wouldn't hear the same disturbing details of how prosecutors say he pulled a girl into the woods and tried to kill her four years ago.

"He strangled her so much it left bruises on her face and insect bites all over her body," Anna Valentini said in court Thursday.

Late Thursday afternoon, the jury returned a guilty verdict against Rosales on charges of kidnapping, attempted murder and sexual battery after deliberating for around two hours. Rosales faces a mandatory life sentence, but has to stand trial for murder in Arizona.

Another classic case of WHY we must deport illegal aliens and do it NOW. This ASSWIPE has wrecked many lives with his heinous crimes. Let us hope he faces the ELECTRIC CHAIR in Arizona. (Once convicted of course.) At what point will we as a nation stand up and put a stop to this maddness? How many lives must be destroyed coddling these criminals? IF THE LAW IS THE LAW

So if Lawmakers or the courts of US government determine that it is against the law for the words 'under God' to be on our money, then, so be it. And if that same government decides that the 'Ten Commandments' are not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it.

I say, 'so be it,' because I would like to be a law abiding US citizen. I say, 'so be it,' because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions. I would like to think that those people have the American public's best interests at heart.

BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE? Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don't believe the Government and its employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of American life.

I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter. After all, it's just another day. I'd like the US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it's just another day. I'd like the Senate and the House of Representatives to not have to worry about getting home for the 'Christmas Break.' After all it's just another day. I'm thinking that a lot of my tax payer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter. It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be 'politically correct.'

In fact.... I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshiping God...) because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day.... What do you all think???? If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected officials and activists Judges wouls stop giving into the minority opinions and begin, once again, to represent the 'majority' of ALL of the American people. SO BE IT........... Amen...

The History of the Middle Finger

Well, now......here's something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I feel compelled to send it on to my more intelligent friends in the hope that they, too, will feel edified.

Isn't history more fun when you know something about it?

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew' (or 'pluck yew').

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute!

It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird. IT IS STILL AN APPROPRIATE SALUTE TO THE FRENCH TODAY!

Challenge to Scientific Consensus on Global Warming: Analysis Finds Hundreds of Scientists Have Published Evidence Countering Man-Made Global Warming Fears

A new analysis of peer-reviewed literature reveals that more than 500 scientists have published evidence refuting at least one element of current man-made global warming scares. More than 300 of the scientists found evidence that 1) a natural moderate 1,500-year climate cycle has produced more than a dozen global warmings similar to ours since the last Ice Age and/or that 2) our Modern Warming is linked strongly to variations in the sun's irradiance. "This data and the list of scientists make a mockery of recent claims that a scientific consensus blames humans as the primary cause of global temperature increases since 1850," said Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Dennis Avery.
Other researchers found evidence that 3) sea levels are failing to rise importantly; 4) that our storms and droughts are becoming fewer and milder with this warming as they did during previous global warmings; 5) that human deaths will be reduced with warming because cold kills twice as many people as heat; and 6) that corals, trees, birds, mammals, and butterflies are adapting well to the routine reality of changing climate.
Despite being published in such journals such as Science, Nature and Geophysical Review Letters, these scientists have gotten little media attention. "Not all of these researchers would describe themselves as global warming skeptics," said Avery, "but the evidence in their studies is there for all to see."
The names were compiled by Avery and climate physicist S. Fred Singer, the co-authors of the new book Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years, mainly from the peer-reviewed studies cited in their book. The researchers' specialties include tree rings, sea levels, stalagmites, lichens, pollen, plankton, insects, public health, Chinese history and astrophysics.
"We have had a Greenhouse Theory with no evidence to support it-except a moderate warming turned into a scare by computer models whose results have never been verified with real-world events," said co-author Singer. "On the other hand, we have compelling evidence of a real-world climate cycle averaging 1470 years (plus or minus 500) running through the last million years of history. The climate cycle has above all been moderate, and the trees, bears, birds, and humans have quietly adapted."
"Two thousand years of published human histories say that the warm periods were good for people," says Avery. "It was the harsh, unstable Dark Ages and Little Ice Age that brought bigger storms, untimely frost, widespread famine and plagues of disease." "There may have been a consensus of guesses among climate model-builders," says Singer. "However, the models only reflect the warming, not its cause." He noted that about 70 percent of the earth's post-1850 warming came before 1940, and thus was probably not caused by human-emitted greenhouse gases. The net post-1940 warming totals only a tiny 0.2 degrees C.
The historic evidence of the natural cycle includes the 5000-year record of Nile floods, 1st-century Roman wine production in Britain, and thousands of museum paintings that portrayed sunnier skies during the Medieval Warming and more cloudiness during the Little Ice Age. The physical evidence comes from oxygen isotopes, beryllium ions, tiny sea and pollen fossils, and ancient tree rings. The evidence recovered from ice cores, sea and lake sediments, cave stalagmites and glaciers has been analyzed by electron microscopes, satellites, and computers. Temperatures during the Medieval Warming Period on California's Whitewing Mountain must have been 3.2 degrees warmer than today, says Constance Millar of the U.S. Forest Service, based on her study of seven species of relict trees that grew above today's tree line.
Singer emphasized, "Humans have known since the invention of the telescope that the earth's climate variations were linked to the sunspot cycle, but we had not understood how. Recent experiments have demonstrated that more or fewer cosmic rays hitting the earth create more or fewer of the low, cooling clouds that deflect solar heat back into space-amplifying small variations in the intensity of the sun.
Avery and Singer noted that there are hundreds of additional peer-reviewed studies that have found cycle evidence, and that they will publish additional researchers' names and studies. They also noted that their book was funded by Wallace O. Sellers, a Hudson board member, without any corporate contributions.

Goliath is our new puppy and what a puppy he is. At 3 months old he is one of the smartest dogs I have ever seen. He has picked up several basic commands such as sit, bark, lay down, roll over and shake with ease.

This picture was taken out in the yard next to a downed tree that I am in the process of cleaning up. Goliath of course is in the way of my efforts to get the mess cleaned up!

He is without a doubt, me and the wife's pride and joy. Stay turned for more Goliath pic's in the near future.

This is a MUST READ.....

Despite the fact it comes from the far FAR and FAR left NPR this is a GREAT article about a true American Hero and Navy Seal, Marcus Luttrell. He was the sole surviving SEAL after his team's ambush in the mountains of Afghanistan. He was shot multiple times and crawled miles and miles fighting the whole way--to safety. In this article luttrell would like to say a thing or two about the so called "rules of war" that our troops are expected to follow but the enemy doesn't. This is truely a GREAT Read.... GOOD NEWS for ONCE!!

A few days ago my left knee began to hurt, and I mean hurt.

Being no stranger to pain, this DROVE me TO GET OFF my ass and go to see the doctor. Having had a few surgeries on my body over the years I was CONVINCED I had torn some cartilage in my left knee. The pain and discomfort was the nearly the same as when I tore cartilage in my right knee in 1997. There was some slight swelling as well to further my suspicions.

Well upon finishing examining me my Doc tells he doesn't think I need surgery and that I have just sprained my knee. Rest will solve the problem. So far the Doc has been right. My knee is feeling a little better each day. THANK THE LORD!! Amen!! So mote it be!

What puzzles me is I don't know HOW I SPRAINED my knee. There was no fall, slip or bump to explain the sudden pain. Anyway I am thankful I won't be needing the rest of the summer to rehab a bum knee and special thanks to my PCP Doc who is the BEST. Medicine needs more doctors like him. The only positive thing IF I did need surgery is that at least I have this seasons firewood all taken care of so I wouldn't be behind the 8 ball that way.

Guantanamo cell is better than freedom, says inmate fighting against release

An inmate of Guantanamo Bay who spends 22 hours each day in an isolation cell is fighting for the right to stay in the notorious internment camp.
Ahmed Belbacha fears that he will be tortured or killed if the United States goes ahead with plans to return him to his native Algeria.
The Times has learnt that Mr Belbacha, who lived in Britain for three years, has filed an emergency motion at the US Court of Appeals in Washington DC asking for his transfer out of Guantanamo to be halted. He was cleared for release from Camp Delta in February and his lawyers believe that his return to Algerian custody is imminent.
Mr Belbacha says that if he returns to Algeria, he faces the threat of torture by security services and murder by Islamist terrorists.

Peru cold snap kills 70 children

At least 70 children have died during a spell of freezing weather in the Andean regions of Peru, officials have said. The children, all under five years old, died of pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses over the past three months.

They lived in rural areas at high altitude, where temperatures in some cases are reported to have plummeted to as low as -20C (-4F).

Peruvian Health Minister Carlos Vallejos said almost 2,000 medics had been deployed in the affected areas. He told the BBC he expected the situation to get worse before it improves.

The National Civil Defence Institute (Indeci) has launched a campaign to provide clothing and shelter to the worst affected areas. The institute's General Luis Salomino said he had collected 300 metric tons of clothes and other supplies from businesses, individuals and government departments in the capital, Lima.

Forecasters in Peru are predicting the cold spell will continue until September.
Even low-lying jungle regions are facing unusually cold weather, with temperatures dropping to 10C (50F).
Many adults have also died during the harsh winter, and thousands of people are suffering from pneumonia and other respiratory infections.

Forecaster cuts 2007 hurricane outlook

NEW YORK (Reuters) -The 2007 hurricane season may be less severe than forecast due to cooler-than-expected water temperatures in the tropical Atlantic, private forecaster WSI Corp said on Tuesday.

The season will bring 14 named storms, of which six will become hurricanes and three will become major hurricanes, WSI said in its revised outlook. WSI had previously expected 15 named storms of which eight would become hurricanes and four would become major hurricanes.

"Because the ocean temperatures have not yet rebounded from the significant drop in late spring, we have decided to reduce our forecast numbers slightly," said Todd Crawford, a WSI seasonal forecaster. The energy and insurance industries are keenly watching the 2007 storm season after the record damage caused by hurricanes two years ago.

During the 2005 season, hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast and temporarily knocked out a quarter of U.S. crude and fuel production, sending energy prices to then-record highs.

We feel the general threat to the western Gulf is reduced slightly, with a corresponding increase in the threat to the eastern Gulf and Florida," Crawford said.

NEW PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION

Buenos Aires gets first snow since 1918

Thousands of Argentines cheered and threw snowballs in the streets of Buenos Aires on Monday as the capital's first major snowfall since 1918 spread a thin white mantle across the region.

"Despite all my years, this is the first time I've ever seen in snow in Buenos Aires," said Juana Benitez, an 82-year-old who joined children celebrating in the streets.

Argentina's National Weather Service said it was the first major snow in Buenos Aires since June 22, 1918, though sleet or freezing rain have been periodically reported in decades since.
One man stripped to his shorts to welcome the snow. Children scraped snow of cars and threw snowballs. Motorists honked horns, some with small snowmen on their hoods. Some fender benders were reported on slick suburban streets.

The snow followed a bitter cold snap in late May that saw subfreezing temperatures, the coldest in 40 years in Buenos Aires. That cold wave contributed to an energy crisis and 23 deaths from exposure.

A little thought I had today..

Every nation secures its borders in some fashion. Some tighter than others. The most repressive regimes build walls to keep their subjects in. Our simply refuse to let them leave on their own free will. What happens when America's borders are left open? Do Americans stream towards the borders in massive hoards to escape? No they don't. But the massive hoards on the other side try and succeed in invading this nation for one reason or another. Some come to try and create a better life for themselves wishing to make America their new home. Others come to work, and work hard to send their hard earned wages back to whatever 3rd world "Hell Hole" they came from. Still many many others come and have a more nefarious agenda.

A secure border is tantamount to a strong nation. It is imperative for this country to survive that we secure not only our Southern border with Mexico but our Northern border with Canada. We can ill afford the cost of illegal immigration anymore. The cost to the American taxpayer is to high. So high that is cutting into vital services that many Americans need, depend on and have a right too. America can longer bare the burden these illegal aliens are imposing upon our society. Don't believe me? Check out your local Hospital Emergency Room. Chances are it is filled with illegal aliens who are using it as a walk in clinic for their ingrown toenails.

Do not forget the security risks involved with open borders. Every citizen of the US has the right to expect and demand that the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT secure the borders and remove those who reside in this nation illegally. It is that simple and there is not a lot of room for a gray area. The situation is as black and white as it can be.

The critical question is why does the government (ie The White House and Congress) fail to grasp the basic tenants of the issue?

A plausible explanation in a nutshell is for the Republican Party illegal aliens mean cheap labor for business. For the Democratic Party illegal aliens mean more voters. While one is legally supposed to be a US Citizen to vote there is NO LAW requiring proof of citizenship to be check at the voting both. Efforts by Republicans to enact legislation requiring ID to be presented at the polls has been repeatedly shot down by the Democrats. There are other factors of course. Some people truly believe that America should have an "open door" policy for immigrants. While I understand and appreciate this sentiment, it is foolhardy at best.

A strong and effective immigration policy doesn't mean you close the door to people seeking a better life. An effective policy insures that those who do come to the US do so in a lawful manner. Do we as a people of the US want criminals from other nations setting up permanent shop within or borders? Murders, Pedophiles and Rapists? Those who want to come to the US should be required to bring something to the table. Something to enrich this country. There has to be a "give and take". We don't need freeloaders collecting welfare and Social Security that are a collective drain on society.

New immigrants should be required to learn English as part of the Citizenship process. One of the strongest and fundamental things that binds a nation together is a common language. Teaching children in the public school system American History in Spanish, Portuguese or any other language is a disgrace. With a bi, tri or quad lingual nation, pride and nationalism are nearly impossible to accomplish. Exceptions to the rule can be found but these are the exceptions.

Some argue that America has always been a "Multi Cultural" society and as a result the current immigration issue is nothing to be worried about. The counter argument is America is not and has not ever been MULTI Cultural. America is MULTI ETHNIC. While the people who have made up the face of the nation have been from all four corners of the Earth past immigrants have considered themselves Americans once they arrived. They worked hard in their jobs. Learned the language and strived to blend into society. They demanded their children go to school and get an education. They wanted and believed in this nation. And they succeeded.

The current immigrants we are challenged with are refusing to learn English. In many parts of the country basic traffic signs are now bi lingual.They are not instilling themselves or their children with a sense of nationalistic pride about America. The drop out rate from high school is as high as 70% even 80% in some urban areas. They do not wave the flag of this country, choosing to instead wave the flag from whatever country they come from at pro immigration rallies. They do not offer in any great numbers to serve in the Military, even though Military Service is pathway to "fast track" Citizenship. They seem to want all the rights and benefits of being an American without the duties and responsibilities that come with it. Income tax avoidance is rampant as well as a general disrespect for the law. Starting with their illegal entry into the country and yet most claim they want to be an American.

A true and comprehensive Immigration Reform bill that is passed into law will allow for people to come to the US providing they do so legally. We can start by deporting the 12 to 20 million that are here illegally now. New applicants cannot have a criminal record from their home country. They must have a job and pay taxes. NO Welfare or Social Security. There can be ZERO tolerance for a new immigrant that breaks the law. If convicted of a felony (and that includes Drunk Driving, Unregistered Car and Driving without Insurance) they must be deported. They should be required to learn English and pass not only a written but ORAL test as well. A basic American History test should also be given as well as having to name EVERY STATE and its Capitol. New immigrants should also bring something to the table besides a strong back. Those with a degree or qualified trade or skill should be given precedence. Children born to immigrant parents while waiting to EARN citizenship should not be given automatic citizenship as the law is now. The "Anchor Baby" law must be scrapped.

If they truly want to be an "American" then they must show us that they do. If these points are enacted this country can separate the wheat from the chaff.

Fourteen Reasons for a Strong Immigration Bill.

The biggest glaring hole in the recently defeated "Immigration Bill" was that it was put together "behind closed doors." No commitee hearings were held. It never faced the scrutiny that every other bill presented to Congress faces. The "do something, ANYTHING. NOW!!" politicians were exposed for their elitist attitude toward the governed. In his new book, The Assault on Reason, Al Gore pleads, "We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the truth." Gore repeatedly asks that science and reason displace cynical political posturing as the central focus of public discourse.

If Gore really means what he writes, he has an opportunity to make a difference by leading by example on the issue of global warming.

A cooperative and productive discussion of global warming must be open and honest regarding the science. Global warming threats ought to be studied and mitigated, and they should not be deliberately exaggerated as a means of building support for a desired political position.

Many of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, ''An Inconvenient Truth,'' have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging where science has rebutted his claims.

For example, Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reported, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame."

Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine."

Gore claims global warming is causing more tornadoes. Yet the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated in February that there has been no scientific link established between global warming and tornadoes.

Gore claims global warming is causing more frequent and severe hurricanes. However, hurricane expert Chris Landsea published a study on May 1 documenting that hurricane activity is no higher now than in decades past. Hurricane expert William Gray reported just a few days earlier, on April 27, that the number of major hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. Atlantic coast has declined in the past 40 years. Hurricane scientists reported in the April 18 Geophysical Research Letters that global warming enhances wind shear, which will prevent a significant increase in future hurricane activity.

Gore claims global warming is causing an expansion of African deserts. However, the Sept. 16, 2002, issue of New Scientist reports, "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat . . . making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa."

Gore argues Greenland is in rapid meltdown, and that this threatens to raise sea levels by 20 feet. But according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Glaciology, "the Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins and growing inland, with a small overall mass gain." In late 2006, researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute reported that the past two decades were the coldest for Greenland since the 1910s.

Gore claims the Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of global warming. Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. More recently, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003. And the U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century.
Each of these cases provides an opportunity for Gore to lead by example in his call for an end to the distortion of science. Will he rise to the occasion? Only time will tell.

The Brits dodged a bullet today. No question about it. Still the pessimist in me is still waiting for the other shoe to drop here in the US. I am still surprised that we have not seen this kind of stuff happening on our streets and I am ever thankful it hasn't. It is a clear testament to the FBI, CIA and NSA that we haven't had an attack on US soil since 9/11. We know the terrorist have tried, and still are trying. To keep this record our security services have to be perfect 100% of the time. Something that is impossible to do.

The best advice is don't live in fear but do keep your eyes and ears open. If something looks or feels out of place follow your gut instinct. Better to be safe than sorry.

Australian citrus farmers fear damage after coldest June day ever...

LOCAL citrus producers have their fingers crossed waiting to see if their fruit suffered frost damage after the area experienced its coldest June day ever last week. Consecutive days of thick and heavy frosts, and temperatures dropping to as low as four degrees, may have taken their toll.

Riverina Citrus executive officer Peter Morrish said if fruit had been damaged it could take weeks to see, but fruit with a high internal sugar content should be unscathed. “It’s hard to tell at the moment if fruit has been damaged because it takes a while for the damage to be seen in the fruit,” Mr Morrish said. Griffith and District Citrus Growers Association president Frank Battistel said low temperatures highlighted the importance of winter irrigation to citrus growers. “The watering began on Sunday but the extreme frosts were on Friday and Saturday,” Mr Battistel said. “If any damage has occurred, and we don’t know if it has yet, it will most likely have occurred then.”

I've been trying to find something worth posting, either a funny or serious bit of news or something my warped brain conjures up and NOTHING is happening on either front. So I haven't forgotten the lack of a post for the past 10 days or so but as I said nothing is "floating my boat" right now. Even my other blog www.lyrichut.blogspot.com is somewhat dry as well. This happens now and then. Don't know why but it does. Sooner or later that "spark" will come back and CerebralWaste will be firing on all synapses again.

An Immigrant Tail
A Somali refugee arrives in Minneapolis, qat in hand, as a new immigrant to the United States.

He is in complete awe of the tall buildings he sees and slightly bemused about the frigid weather. It is mid MAY after all and the temps are in the mid 60's F.

With wide eyes and great pleasure he stops the first person he sees walking down the street and says, "Thank you Mr. American for letting me in this country, giving me housing, food stamps, free medical care, and free education! Now I can bring my whole family here as well" He pauses for a second and shouts in broken English, "AMERICA IS WONDEFUL COUNTRY!!! (The Somali passed on the FREE ENGLISH as SECOND LANGUAGE classes offered at the local Community College)

The passerby, slightly bemused says, "You are mistaken, I am Mexican. Senor."

The Somali refugee immigrant stumbles walking on the smooth Minneapolis sidewalks, unaccustomed to walking on anything other than rough land mined filled dirt roads, meanders on and encounters another passerby. "Thank you for having such beautiful country here in America !" he exclaims.

The person says back to him in broken English, "I not American, I Vietnamese."

The new arrival walks further, and the next person he sees he stops, shakes his hand, generously offers the man some of his coveted qat and says, "Thank you for the wonderful America!"That person puts up his hand and says, "I am from Brazil, I am not American!"

At this point the Somali refugee immigrant catches a glimpse of the single most American symbol he knows and his eyes have ever seen. No, it isn't the American Flag, it is the Golden Arches of McDonalds. He hurriedly crosses the street, ignoring the cross walk designed for pedestrian use and rushes in, eyes fully ablaze in wonderment. He rushes to the front of the line pushing people aside. He gleefully orders a coffee and a BigMac and exclaims to the cashier how much he loves America.

The cashier, somewhat puzzled at the Somali's strange behavior quips. "I do not like America, I am only here working for money to send home to my village in Guatemala."

Unfettered by the cashiers remark, the Somali grabs a seat and inhaled his BigMac and swilled his coffee and left McDonalds chewing some more qat. Seemingly ignoring the HELPWANTED sign in the window of McDonalds and the one on the counter and on the tray liner.

About a half a block down the street, he spots a nice looking lady and he rushes up to her and gleefully asks, "Are you American?" She says, "No! I am from Africa !"

Somewhat befuddled and puzzled by all the NON AMERICANS he has encountered since arriving in Minneapolis, he scratches his head and gums the qat in his mouth like a cow chewing her cud.

He then asks her, "Where are all the Americans?" The African lady checks her watch and puts one hand on his shoulder and says..."Probably at work..."

America is truly a wonderful country!

SOMALI PIRATES CAPTURE DANISH SHIP AS FRENCH WARSHIP LOOKS ON

SOMALI pirates hijacked a small Danish-flag general cargo ship last Saturday some 114 miles off the coast and sailed it towards Hobbio, north of Mogadishu, where there is now a small fleet of hijacked vessels. According to reports a French warship arrived on the scene as the Danica White entered Somali waters but refused requests from the ship's manager, H Folmer, to intervene within territorial waters.

The 1,616 dwt ship was on passage from Sharjah to Mombasa with five crew on board. There are also three fishing vessels being held at Hobbio. It is understood negotiations for their release are underway. There are unconfirmed rumours that a crew member from one of the fishing vessels may have been killed.

So here was a perfect chance to put a serious dent into the PIRATES that have been lurking in these waters and the FRENCH, with a WARSHIP no less, REFUSE to help. How in the world can the FRENCH live with themselves knowing they possibly have allowed the crew to be sent to their deaths. Does anyone have a semi rational idea why the FRENCH refused to lend aid in a obvious time of need? I don't care one bit about the "territorial waters" arguement and possibly violating it. Hello the FRENCH are in a WARSHIP. Then again perhaps the FRENCH* definition of a Warship is 3 French Men in a row boat, one cheap hooker with a case of wine and a brick of cheese and only one condom. Only possible explination I can think of at this time. Anyone have any better ideas?

I hope the DANSIH open a big ole can of European "whoop ass" and help put an end to this shit once and for all. The US Navy has opened fire on these Pirates more than once and will continue to do so if given the chance. What is needed is complete decimation of the Pirates and the people who give them safe harbor.

Meanwhile the FRENCH are pussies. But we already know that...

Drivers in 50 States and District of Columbia Ranked

NEW YORK (May 24) -- One out of six drivers on the road today would not pass a written driver's license test if they were given one today, according to a national survey conducted by GMAC Insurance.

The survey asked questions from actual state Department of Motor Vehicle tests. Questions covered both traffic laws and safe driving habits. The average score nationwide was 77.1 out of 100.

Respondents from New York state had the lowest average score, answering just 71 percent of the questions correctly. New Yorkers also had the highest failure rate, with 36 percent failing to earn what would be considered a passing score on the test. Idaho had the highest average score, at 81.7. At least 100 people from each state and Washington D.C. were asked 20 questions taken from actual DMV tests. The questions and answers were applicable to all states.

In general, residents in eastern states fared worst and residents of western states did best. The bottom five ranked states, from worst to best, were New York, New Jersey, Washington D.C., Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The top five states, ranked from best to worst, were Idaho, Alaska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Kansas. Questions included such things as "A traffic light with a flashing red signal means?" and "If, while driving, a tire suddenly blows out, you should..." Well it just says what I have been saying for YEARS and YEARS. While people in the North East and especially Massachusetts, may have the highest percentage of College/University graduates they are lacking common sense. Not only in who and what they continue to vote for, but in driving as well. It just goes to show you that being educated doesn't make you smart! I say CONGRATS to the people of Idaho, Alaska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Kansas for having the best drivers in the country. You guys are welcome on our roads ANYTIME!

The Passing of a Dear Dear Friend...

On May 7th, 2007 I wrote this post "The 6:00 am Gang at Panera" concerning the friendship 4 people from various walks of life had developed over time. We meet every morning at 6:00 am for coffee. I am sad to say that one of the "Panera Gang of Four" has passed from this earth.

Earl, our resident small engine maestro and one hullava guy passed away Tuesday afternoon, the 22nd of May. Earl was a friend to all who knew him. Some affectionately called him "EARL THE PEARL". Earl by all accounts was a man's man. The true salt of the earth. I loved Earl like a brother and will continue to keep a place in my heart for him. Always.

I had just settled in on the couch for a hard evening of watching the extended version of the "RETURN OF THE KING" from the Lord of the Rings trilogy when "THE COLONEL" called me with the news of Earl's unexpected passing. I felt a range of emotions hit me like a brick wall upon hearing the news. Rage, sadness, anger, sorrow and many tears washed upon me. The realization that he was gone is a bitter pill. Friendships like the 4 of us have are a rare and special thing. As a result I feel like part of me is gone, and it is in a way. Yet I can say none of us will ever forget Earl. Ever. He was a special guy. I can honestly say we all will still meet each other every day for coffee as well. It is important in times like these to keep the tradition going.

With Earl's passing things will be different. No question about it. It is going to be mighty uncomfortable seeing his empty chair every morning. But I am confident our friendship with each other and the bonds we share will grow stronger as a result.

God bless you Earl. I love you from the bottom of my heart. You will be missed but never ever forgotten.

Enough is Enough

Why do some people have a hard time doing, to quote Spike Lee, "Do the right thing"? (It pains me greatly to quote Spike Lee!) Why is it in society we seem fixated on "Celeb's" who constantly flaunt the law and the norms of decency? The recent actions of one Paris Hilton come to mind as one who has displayed a rather callous attitude towards the law. Even going to far as to gather a petition to be presented to the California Governor begging for pardon.

Cut to the chase, Paris broke the law. Plain and simple. Not once but at least twice and got caught doing so. Now she must pay the price and serve 45 days in jail. Yet Paris, her posse and a surprising number of people agree with her and feel "Princess Paris" shouldn't be sent to jail to pay for her crimes.

I must admit is rather refreshing to see "Princess Paris" get dope slapped into a realization that she is not the cherry on top of everyone's Hot Fudge Sunday. And kudos to the Judge who didn't let her high priced legal team or her celebrity status influence the sentence she was slapped with. Frankly I think "Princess Paris got off way to easy in the first place. Driving under the influence is a serious crime. And it is a CRIME, one that even to this day society doesn't take seriously enough. But oddly enough "Princess Paris" isn't facing jail time for driving drunk. She is going to spend 45 days for driving on a suspended license as a result of her driving drunk. She should have spent at least 45 days in the slammer for driving drunk in the first place.

Many "Professional Athletes" are another above the law feeling group that has remained unchecked and relatively unchallenged for years. After a few too many embarrassing run ins with the law the NFL has decided to step up to the plate and BITCH SLAP PAC MAN JONES with what basically amounts to a year long suspension from the game. It is about time too. I have to wonder what MLB is going to do with Barry "Steroid" Bonds should he be indicted for his role in the current Balco investigation. Will MLB has the stones to step up to the plate and strip Bonds of the all but his Home run record? Will the powers that be overlook Bonds's "questionable" actions and behavior and elected him to the Hall of Fame when he is eligible?

Don't we as a people have the nerve to stand up and at least hold these celebrities accountable for their actions even if the legal system and in some cases professional organization seem to protect?

Now don't misread what I am saying. Our current legal system is the fairest in the world. But like everything else it has its problems. Letting people off with suspended sentences for DUI, OUI and DWI is common for 1st offenders if there was no bodily injury and property damage as a result of the persons actions behind the wheel. The NFL, NBA and MLB have a duty to protect their respective brands. At what point are we as a people going to start to demand change to the current status quo? At what point are we as fans going to start demanding that our sports heroes behave in their public lives? Or should we?

Like it or not these public figures have an impact on our society. They all have a marketed image based on their looks,talent or athletic ability. Images crafted to make money and make an impact in our lives one way or another. There needs to be a public backlash. A backlash that swells to the point that it is no longer fashionable to be on the wrong side of the law, morals or ethics. The jail term handed down to "Princess Paris" is a good start. The NFL's tackling of Pac Man Jones sends a powerful message as well. More needs to happen. And that "more" can come from you and me. We can turn these negative influences into positive ones by holding these people accountable. Don't patronize the products the sell. Let the teams the professional athletes play for know that as a fan you demand a higher standard of accountability from their athletes.

Real men and women don't take steroids. They don't drive drunk. They don't beat their wives or girlfriends. Real men and women don't do drugs. If a real man or women does break the law they step to plate, admit their error and take the punishment handed to them. We are all human and we all can make "misteaks". With many they seem to continue to make the same mistakes over and over again to the point that their behavior becomes the norm and almost expected and sadly sometimes embraced by society. They become rewarded for bad behavior. I say enough is enough.

**REO SPEEDWAGON** BACK ON THE CHARTS!

Congrats to REO SPEEDWAGON for cracking the top 40 with their new single "I NEEDED TO FALL" off of their new album titled "FIND YOUR OWN WAY HOME". The first new album from the boys in over 10 years!

While it may be the first new album in over 10 years from REO, don't let that fool you into thinking they haven't been around. The band has been relentlessly touring the entire time with such bands as Styx, Journey, Survivor, Fleetwood Mac and Foreigner just to name a few. More often than not "Headlining" the venues including nearly 2 years on the road with Styx. Sadly the band was planning to hook up this summer with the legendary band BOSTON for a smashing co headline Summer Tour. Due the untimely passing of Boston's lead singer Brad Delp those plans now seem to be on an indefinite hold.

It is nice to see REO back on the charts cranking out ROCK SOLID music that is timeless by design. I can't wait to see them again and you can count on me being front row center stage left when they roll into the Boston area!

The new album is great. It is ever bit as good, if not better that the 1980 release of the multi Platinum disc Hi/Infidelity. A solid mix or classic REO rockers and just enough tear jerking ballads to keep you coming back for more. This puts everything in perspective...
Are our "Lawmakers" too stupid to get it?

When we bought our new home home out in the woods, I gladly bought a bird feeder and I hung it on my back deck and filled it with seed. Hoping to enjoy the diversity of birds up close. Within a few days we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food.

Then the birds started building nests in the rafters of the deck, above the table, and next to the barbecue. and in the adjecent trees around the yard.

Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table...everywhere. Worse my new truck was plastered with bird crap... DAILY if not hourly.

Then some of the birds turned mean:

They would dive bomb me and my wife. Going to the mailbox required an umbrella. Then the birds began to peck and dive at me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket.

Others birds became boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food. Too lazy to pick up what the spilled. Heaven forbid!

After a while the situation became so bad I couldn't even sit on my own deck anymore. I took down the bird feeder and within three days the birds were gone.

It took a few days but I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the yard. Soon, the back yard was like it used to be...quite, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.

Now lets see...our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, free education and allows anyone born here to be a automatic citizen.

Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services. Small apartments are housing 5 or more families. You have to wait 4 to 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor. Your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English. Causing the teacher to spend more of her precious time working with those who don't speak english. Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box. I have to press "one" to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than "Old Glory" are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties. Yet I wonder how many of them truely pay the taxes due on what they earn? How many of them have stolen someone's identity so they can "work" here?

Maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder.

The 6:00 am Gang at Panera

Nearly every weekday morning around 6:00 am a group of 4 of us meet at the local Panera Bread for a little comradery and good ole fashion "Male Bonding".

The group consists of moi, a psycho shawarma lover and bonsai nut, Earl, our resident small engine maestro, Ed, the law enforcement agent and pistol packin' locksmith and last but not least "The Colonel". Patriot, man of God and all around good guy.

We all hang around swill some coffee or soda, perhaps dine on a pastry or two and shoot the bull for a couple of hours. Everyday without fail, we solve the problems plaguing the universe, gossip, bust each other chops, talk politics and shop and then leave Panera feeling like we could take on the world. The following morning the same scene repeats itself and duplicates itself day after day after day until the weekend rolls around. Come Monday morning we then we start the whole process over.

I wouldn't trade these weekday Panera Bread bull sessions for anything. They are great and I am happy to say are they are highlight of my day. Nothing beats the company of good friends. Nothing. Even though rising from my warm bed at 5:00 AM to meetup with everyone at 6:00 AM when the doors open can be a pain in the ass at times, I do it and soon the wiriness of being slightly groggy lifts from my eyes as the caffeine from my Dr. Pepper works its way into my bloodstream. Well it was Dr. Pepper until Panera dumped it for some fizzy Ice Tea. Now I slowly slurp Mountain Dew since I can't stand Pepsi. Why a high end eatery like Panera serves Pepsi is beyond me but that is another story for another time I suppose!

We all come from vastly different backgrounds and our politics are different as well. Despite this there is a bond between us. A certain magic that you can't create. It just happens. You can't force friendship. Friendship happens or it doesn't with people. Yet the four of us have a unique bond that is something no one can take from us.

The story of how this "foursome" started isn't steeped in grandeur and lore. It was rather spontaneous in a sense, yet at the same time slow to develop. A contradiction I know, but that is the only way to explain it. It all started when Me and "The Colonel" began meeting every Thursday morning at 7:00 am at Panera for coffee a couple of years ago. A simple once a week thing between friends. After a couple of years, Ed and Earl started showing up and sitting at another part of Panera. I didn't know Ed and only slightly knew Earl. The Colonel was friends with Ed and soon we started to join each other. This soon turned from a once a week gathering to everyday. That pretty much sums it up. Nothing flashy or "Hollywood" about it.

The bond between us was almost instantaneous I think. 4 guys from different, lifestyles, backgrounds and ages connecting in a positive way. I love these guys and would do anything for anyone of them and I think they would do the same for me. At its very core this is a friendship and friendship is one of the most important things we have in life. The Greek Philosopher EPICURUS (341-270 BC) summed it up pretty well when he said. ""It is not so much our friends' help that helps us, as the confident knowledge that they will help us."

You can't create something like this. It just happens. But you can open yourself up for it. Don't' be afraid to meet new people. Ask a neighbor over for out for a cup of coffee or lunch. Explore other people and keep an open mind. You don't have to agree with them 100%. Life would be pretty boring if we used this as our sole determination for friendship. Be open and honest and you just might find yourself some new friends. See you in the morning guys!

Why do Town Managers and Mayors threaten to cut Fire and Police service every time a buget "crisis" strikes a community?

Ever notice that Government is very inefficient when it comes to managing money and resources?

Why to teachers clamor for pay raises when they only work 8.5 to 9 months a year WITH all the guaranteed Holidays and Vacations built in that people in the dreaded "Private Sector" don't get off?

Why do we place limits of how many hours a truck driver can operate his rig yet in Massachusetts we place no limits on how many off duty DETAILS a police officer can work? Keep in mind the Police Office has to make critical split second decisions involving life and death as a matter of course. Shouldn't we demand that he/she should be as rested as a truck driver?

Why do Celebrities such as Rosie O'Donnell, Babs Streisand, George Clooney, Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise feel they are an authority on matters of international politics, specifically the Middle East, when none have ever spent any significant time there?

Ever notice the "news" rarely reports anything POSITIVE unless it is in the last 30 seconds of the broadcast?

Why is there always one ASSHOLE neighbor in every neighborhood?

Why does Comcast suck at being a cable operator in terms of customer service but is excellent in customer service as an ISP? Wouldn't be that little thing called "competition" would it?

Why did the Catholic Church continue to cover up their Priest's sex abuse problems for years? And why isn't Cardinal Law in JAIL for his part?

WHY WHY WHY did Panera Bread eliminate Dr Pepper from their fountain drinks and replace it with a Raspberry Ice Tea concoction? For that matter why is a high end eatery like Panera serving a low class drink like Pepsi?

PEOPLE SUCK. I said it.. PEOPLE SUCK.

People suck. Plain and simple.. PEOPLE SUCK. They will lie, steal, cheat and generally become a royal PAIN IN THE ASS over the smallest issues. Anything to gain an edge on you. At least in their tiny minds.

Today I got an email from someone who made a purchase from me 4 days ago. DEMANDING to know why it isn't at his door. His email basically accused me of stealing his money and not sending him the item. Yeah.. Like I am going to rip someone off for $8.99. Please... Not withstanding the method he choose to have the item shipped from Boston to California takes around 7 days. No this asshole doesn't want to hear that.

What is more disturbing is this person, for some reason, strikes me as the kind of braindead twit who would order a CD or another item off of TV and patiently wait the 4 to 6 weeks for delivery, without so much as a whimper yet expect from me FED EX OVERNIGHT delivery on a Parcel Post budget... HIS BUDGET. Yep..I said it once I will say it again and again and again..PEOPLE SUCK.

Needless to say I am sick of this kind of attitude from people. And to be honest this guy is rather mild. Nothing will ever top the asshat who bought something from me on a Saturday afternoon a couple of months ago and at 8:37 am on the following Monday proceeded to SPAM my email box demanding to know where his item was. Why wasn't it delivered yet. Yadda yadda yadda yadda. This guy couldn't grasp the concept that the FUCKING POST OFFICE isn't open after 12:00 noon on Saturdays and isn't open on Sunday's either. At first I thought he had to have me confused with someone else he bought something from. That had to be the case. Nope it wasn't. He had me in his sights and was looking for a kill. Yep once again.. PEOPLE SUCK.

I need another vacation.

I am OUT OF HERE!!!

And it isn't soon enough.... Yes dedicated CerebralWaste readers my candy ass is vacating the Commonwealth of Taxachusetts for a few days and heading for Sunny Florida. I would rather of course blaze the trail to Bahrain and see some family and friends (of course eat some SHAWARMA as well!) but that trip will have to wait till later. Besides me and SBG on the Island at the same time might be a bit much for the country to take! Not to mention the strong chance of a Shawarma shortage happening with both of us in Bahrain at the same time.

I can't express how much I need this mini vacation. The weather here just SUCKS. My body is wracked with pain and I can't take much more. It snowed yesterday, once again thwarting my attempts to start getting the yard cleaned up. Plus ground is about the break on the long awaited addition to the house we are putting on. That and a wonderful "Farmers Porch" and a new roof. It is going to be a busy Spring and Summer. Not to mention my second bedroom.. The GREENHOUSE.

Once the new room is done I must start shopping for a new Wood Stove. A must have item in my mind if you live in New England with soaring energy costs. We save well over $2000 a year by heating our home with wood. Efficiency on wood stoves are pushing in the 80+% range. Some are more efficient than new furnaces or boilers. Plus wood is a completely RENEWABLE source of energy. Of course what makes the whole thing even better is I have never paid for a single piece of firewood in my life. Firewood is FREE if you keep you eyes open and put the word out you are willing to take the stuff off of peoples hands. I do so enjoy opening my widow in the middle of the winter to cool the house off a bit if needed, plus get some "FRESH AIR" as well.

Three tons of hashish went up in smoke Friday, incinerated by Dutch authorities after a van carrying the illicit cargo crashed and scattered it across the road. Detectives were hunting the van's driver and a passenger who fled the scene, leaving behind the wrecked vehicle and its $20 million cargo.
"It's not something you see every day," police spokesman Hielke Vogelzang said, adding that police were tracing the owner of the van, but "it may be stolen or leased." The crash happened during the morning commute on a highway outside the town of Avenhorn, about 20 miles north of Amsterdam, police said.
Vogelzang said it was unknown whether the vehicle's occupants were injured, but "we're confident we'll catch up to them sooner or later." Police said the van was heading toward Amsterdam when its driver lost control for unknown reasons. They said eyewitnesses saw the van hit a barrier, flip and clip another car before coming to rest. The two occupants ran away.
Packages of hash were scattered around the area, local media reported, and Vogelzang said that hundreds more were found stacked on wooden pallets inside the van.
Marijuana and hash are technically illegal in the Netherlands, but under the country's tolerance policy, police do not arrest anybody for possession of small amounts.
It is sold openly in licensed shops which, paradoxically, have no way of legally acquiring their chief product.

Mother Defends FAT PUKE of a Son....
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- The mother of a 196-pound eight-year-old boy, who could be taken into care because of his weight, has defended her refusal to stop feeding him junk food.Single mum Nicola McKeown says her son Connor McCreaddie refuses to eat healthy foods, such as fruit and vegetables.
"He likes processed foods and if I try him with any salad, vegetables, fruit, he just refuses to eat it or spits it out," she told BBC Radio on Monday."When a child won't eat anything else, you've got to feed them what they like."
The 35-year-old mum -- who has sought help to try to reduce Connor's weight -- rejected a suggestion that she put a lock on the fridge."I wouldn't go that far," she said. "That's not the way to do it, starving your child."
However, Connor has lost one-and-a-half stone following advice from health workers and a dietician at the start of the year. The family, from Wallsend, Newcastle, face a child protection conference with North Tyneside Council on Tuesday.
The last resort would be for social workers to put him into care, but McKeown is confident she can help her son lose weight. Former British Olympic runner Roger Black said Connor's case was "very extreme" -- but that it highlighted the need for exercise to be pushed higher up the school agenda.
"What's interesting for me, and everything I've read over the weekend about this issue, it's always been about diet; it's about what he (Connor) eats. There's no mention of exercise," he told the BBC. "Many, many children in this country are growing up doing very, very little exercise and if you create a culture of young children not used to doing exercise on a daily basis then these problems do happen."
Black has recently spent a term in an inner London comprehensive school to try to encourage 12-year-olds to become more active as part of the run-up to the 2012 Olympics. "The project I've just been involved with is not about creating Olympic medallists for 2012, it's about encouraging young people to do more exercise in school time," he added.
"It absolutely should be compulsory that children do more exercise than our children are doing now, because it is staggering that some children in this country are doing less than an hour's exercise a week in school."

Hey you.. Yeah you. The one with your pants half way down your ass. The one with the ring in your nose or lip and the piercing or two in your ears. The one with the haircut that looks like a Beatle on CRACK styled it. And your breath REEKED of cigarett smoke. Every heard of CERTS? You know who you are. You came to me seeking a job, looking only slightly better than someone attending a midnight showing of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Visible tattoos and all.

You came with an attitude as well, and not even having the decency or common sense of bringing your own pen to fill out an application. I can tell despite your appearance that you have no class or work etchic. How? Just by the way you presented yourself.

Now ask yourself why would I hire you? Even if you would by some slim chance happen to turn out to be a good worker do you honestly think I would want you dealing and talking to MY customers? Let alone the fact having them see you in the flesh? Why should I risk investing my time and money into training you? What is the UPSIDE for me? Is having you on MY payroll going to increase MY company's bottom line? Sorry pal I don't see it.

What I see is someone who doesn't care about himself. You simply are looking for a job to put some $$$ in your pocket with no real concern or feeling about the place your work. So here is some advice. Get a belt and pull your pants up. Comb and style your hair into something presentable. Pull the pierced jewelry out of your nose, eyebrow, lip and ears. Learn to speak with the use of slang and for GOD's sake cover up the tattoos that are visible. You look and act like a classless piece of shit. Now once you have done this, come back and see me and bring your own pen for filling out the job application. Until then might I suggest you find a job making pizza somewhere. Notice I said MAKING pizza. If you showed up on my door DELIVERING one I would probably refuse it. Don't forget some breath mints as well.

WASHINGTON – While the military "quagmire" in Iraq was said to tip the scales of power in the U.S. midterm elections, most Americans have no idea more of their fellow citizens – men, women and children – were murdered this year by illegal aliens than the combined death toll of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan since those military campaigns began.
Though no federal statistics are kept on murders or any other crimes committed by illegal aliens, a number of groups have produced estimates based on data collected from prisons, news reports and independent research.

Twelve Americans are murdered every day by illegal aliens, according to statistics released by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. If those numbers are correct, it translates to 4,380 Americans murdered annually by illegal aliens. That's 21,900 since Sept. 11, 2001.
Total U.S. troop deaths in Iraq as of last week were reported at 2,863. Total U.S. troop deaths in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan during the five years of the Afghan campaign are currently at 289, according to the Department of Defense.

But the carnage wrought by illegal alien murderers represents only a fraction of the pool of blood spilled by American citizens as a result of an open border and un-enforced immigration laws.

While King reports 12 Americans are murdered daily by illegal aliens, he says 13 are killed by drunk illegal alien drivers – for another annual death toll of 4,745. That's 23,725 since Sept. 11, 2001.

While no one – in or out of government – tracks all U.S. accidents caused by illegal aliens, the statistical and anecdotal evidence suggests many of last year's 42,636 road deaths involved illegal aliens.
A report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Study found 20 percent of fatal accidents involve at least one driver who lacks a valid license. In California, another study showed that those who have never held a valid license are about five times more likely to be involved in a fatal road accident than licensed drivers.

Statistically, that makes them an even greater danger on the road than drivers whose licenses have been suspended or revoked – and nearly as dangerous as drunk drivers.
King also reports eight American children are victims of sexual abuse by illegal aliens every day – a total of 2,920 annually.

Based on a one-year in-depth study, Deborah Schurman-Kauflin of the Violent Crimes Institute of Atlanta estimates there are about 240,000 illegal immigrant sex offenders in the United States who have had an average of four victims each. She analyzed 1,500 cases from January 1999 through April 2006 that included serial rapes, serial murders, sexual homicides and child molestation committed by illegal immigrants.

As the number of illegal aliens in the U.S. increases, so does the number of American victims.
According to Edwin Rubenstien, president of ESR Research Economic Consultants, in Indianapolis in 1980, federal and state correctional facilities held fewer than 9,000 criminal aliens. But at the end of 2003, approximately 267,000 illegal aliens were incarcerated in all U.S. jails and prisons.

While the federal government doesn't track illegal alien murders, illegal alien rapes or illegal alien drunk driving deaths, it has studied illegal aliens incarcerated in U.S. prisons.
In April 2005, the Government Accountability Office released a report on a study of 55,322 illegal aliens incarcerated in federal, state, and local facilities during 2003. It found the following:
The 55,322 illegal aliens studied represented a total of 459,614 arrests – some eight arrests per illegal alien;
Their arrests represented a total of about 700,000 criminal offenses – some 13 offenses per illegal alien;
36 percent had been arrested at least five times before.

"While the vast majority of illegal aliens are decent people who work hard and are only trying to make a better life for themselves and their families, (something you or I would probably do if we were in their place), it is also a fact that a disproportionately high percentage of illegal aliens are criminals and sexual predators," states Peter Wagner, author of a new report called "The Dark Side of Illegal Immigration." "That is part of the dark side of illegal immigration and when we allow the 'good' in we get the 'bad' along with them. The question is, how much 'bad' is acceptable and at what price?"

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Federal officials said Tuesday they arrested more than 750 illegal immigrants over the past week in the Los Angeles metropolitan area in what they described as one of the biggest such sweeps in U.S. history.
The weeklong series of raids in the five-county region targeted illegal immigrants who had previously been deported for crimes or had ignored final deportation orders.
The raids netted 338 illegal immigrants who were arrested at their homes and apartments and 423 who were identified in area jails since Jan. 17. Those already jailed will be transferred to federal custody when they finish serving their state sentences, said Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The sweep netted illegal immigrants from 14 countries in all, including Mexico, Honduras, Ukraine, India, Japan, Poland and Trinidad.
Of the 761 people arrested, more than 450 have already been deported, Kice said.
The raids were a major push within Operation Return to Sender, a crackdown that has resulted in 13,000 arrests nationwide since June. Immigration officials have also identified 3,000 inmates in state and local jails who will be deported.
The operation targets those illegal immigrants who go into hiding after skipping their deportation proceedings and criminals who have re-entered the United States after being previously deported for crimes committed in this country.
Officials estimate 600,000 illegal immigrants who have ignored deportation orders are still at large, Kice said.
The Associated Press rode along for the first day of sweeps in Orange County last week. Immigration officers gathered at 4 a.m. in a chilly parking lot for a pep talk, then fanned out to houses in Anaheim and Santa Ana.
At the first stop, an apartment complex, a half-dozen agents arrested a 29-year-old illegal immigrant wanted for a driving-under-the-influence conviction. Kice said that man is now helping them find his brother, a registered sex offender.
At the second stop, the agents were looking for a convicted rapist and immigration fugitive. Instead, they arrested six men who could not provide legal papers - and later learned that all six were illegal and four had criminal records.

A small but good start. And to think this is just in Orange County California. More of this MUST be done to remove these criminals from this nation. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or "de plane, Boss, de plane". They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even is. McDonald 's never came in Styrofoam containers. They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Death Watch. Saddam.......

Saddam Hussein's execution is an imminent fate. The "Butcher of Baghdad" will in all short order step up to the gallows and meet the hangman. And it is none to soon.

For decades Saddam TERRORIZED the country and good people of Iraq. Gassing Kurds in the North. Executing 10's of thousand of Shi'. Killing off hundreds if not thousands of his perceived foes. Don't foregt the invasion of Kuwait. His death will be another step towards closure to and for the people of Iraq. Albeit it is a small step, but a very important one at that.

More importantly Saddam is going to be held ACCOUNTABLE for his actions. An unprecedented idea in the region. Accountability to the people. Notice is being served to other despot ARAB leaders in the region that their rule is not absolute. They too may in the future share a similar fate. Action reaction.

It is important to keep in mind that Saddam's execution will not overnight change the current situation in Iraq. It is imperative that the Iraqi's themselves must continue that march themselves. America has and is doing the heavy lifting and will continue to do so. But Iraqi's must work to quell the sectarian violence. I for one will take a sense of pleasure is seeing Saddam hang. Authorities in Iraq have stated the execution will be captured on film for the Iraqi National Archives. I do hope it is shown to the public and the sooner the better. In fact it should be on PAY PER VIEW.

Given the chance I would pull the lever myself though I suspect there are millions who also would like to do the same.

Somehow that just doesn't have the same ring as Bond... James Bond. O well I tried!

On the subject of 007, me and regular poster on this humble blog "THE COLONEL", went to see the latest 007 flick "CASINO ROYAL". It is a MUST SEE. For those that care to peruse old postings you will find one or two that are very critical of the new Bond. I am hear to say that I must EAT my words and admit I was wrong.

The new movie embodies everything that Bond is and must be. Plain and simple. For those who haven't seen it yet there is one caveat. A rather gruesome torture seen in which our beloved 007 is the victim of. It is a scene that will make every guy squirm in his seat and just might make your female counterpart a tad uncomfortable.

Other than that the movie rates two thumbs up! So do yourself a favor and go see it!

Last night was a special night for sure. The Wife and I had the most enjoyable and honorable pleasure of attending a private party celebrating the RE-GRAND RE-OPENING of the legendary TOODY'S of WAKEFIELD.

Food and Spirits flowed and a GREAT TIME was had by all. The food was delicious! As a direct result I am still so full right now I feel like Homer Simpson! mmmmm TOODY's..MMMMMMM

Don't tell anybody, but TOODY'S will open for business to the general public on MONDAY the 23 rd of October. The rebirth of the Toody's legend is more than welcome. You can bet your last $$$$ I will be there on MONDAY! I have a year plus of eating to catch up on!

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally THINKING ABOUT addressing the issue of illegal immigration. YES! It is illegal to enter the US by sneaking in, either over a river, across the desert South West, through the woods or overstaying your visa.

It seems a core group of "Certain People" (ie the loony left or the illegal's themselves) are very angry that the US might protect its own borders. They are upset that the US might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.

So in an effort to try and explain this mentality think of it like this. Let's say I break into your house. After doing so let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors; I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except of course for when I broke into your house). According to the protesters, not only must you let me stay, you must add me to your family's insurance plan, educate my kids, and provide other benefits to me and to my family.

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my right to be there. It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm hard-working and honest, um, except for well, you know. That pesky breaking in to your house issue.

And what a deal it is for me!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being an anti-housebreaker. Oh yeah, and I want you to learn my language so you can communicate with me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America....if you agree, pass it on (in English of course).

Why Not be a Volunteer?

A recent study concerning volunteering concluded with the following excuses as to why many people don't volunteer.
The most common are: "I cannot afford it", "I have no time", "I have no energy" and "I need that time for my personal use".
Any of these excuses sound familiar to you? Come on, be honest!
Almost everyone can volunteer and it is easer than you think. Volunteering is simply taking what you enjoy and using it in a manner to help other people.
It could be as simple as picking up rubbish while out walking, or as complex as volunteering at a local hospital, animal shelter or group home.
Volunteering is particularly helpful to men, urbanites, those with low income, people in poor health and retirees who don't work.
It helps provide people with a sense of purpose and sense of well being.
Yet many don't or won't volunteer and use the excuses above as the reasons.
As an example, I volunteer one morning a week at the local food bank in my hometown. It is a very rewarding experience helping those who need help.
Like many, I didn't think I had the time or energy at first, but now several months into my volunteering I find myself looking forward to the time I spend at the food bank. It serves almost 100 needy people a week and the three or so hours I spend there are very rewarding and, as a result I am truly a better person for it as well.
This is backed up by a study from Cornell University, which concluded that volunteering will boost your self-esteem and energy and will give you a sense of mastery over your personal life.
Volunteering helps society in general because society gains when people help other people.
Still, sadly most people don't seek out volunteer work. Volunteering should become more of a public issue and institutional support from government and business needs to be in place.
Many businesses in the US give their employees time off to do volunteer work. These businesses have recognised that when people volunteer, a sense of greater societal value and recognition is gained and it makes them better employees.
Volunteering makes you feel good in helping those that need help.
It can also improve your resume/CV, by helping you learn new skills, though giving you "hands on" experience in a new capacity.
Volunteering can and will boost your confidence and in general make you feel better about yourself. It can even give you a foot in the door with a new employer. Positive results from positive action.
If you are passionate about helping people and want to make a difference, think of the single word volunteering.
Look for ways in your community to make a difference and do it.

Cape Cod or BUST!

I am off to the Cape for you few days too RELAX and celebrate our anniversary!!

The Cape is a wonderful place to unwind. Even better at this time of the year, as the bulk of the tourists have already left.

Business wise our good friends and neighbors Eric and Jill will be tending to the greenhouse operations for me which is a big relief to say the least.

I hope all who read this blog will have as wonderful of a time as we will. My laptop will be in tow if anyone needs to email me.

TV REMOTES and Assorted Thoughts

Has anyone ever thought about just how lazy the TV Remote control has made us? I wonder just how much weight I could lose I got up off my lazy ass and turned the channel every time I wanted too. Heaven forbid if for some reason my remote vanished I would be beside myself.

I do remember a time when TV's didn't have remotes. Of course then there were only 4 or 5 stations. Pre cable and Satellite days. Now I am dating myself!

On a side note I offered a TV to the friendly fish CHAN'AD Chan’ad Bahraini for his dorm room and he TURNED IT DOWN FLAT!. Not because he has one but because he doesn't WANT ONE!! And yes the TV I had for him had a REMOTE! He is a braver man than I!

MARK FALZONE WHERE ARE YOU?

A couple of years ago I placed a call to my STATE Representative, MARK FALZONE at his State House office. After about 3 transfers I was finally connected to his office. It was an daunting task let me tell you. Once I was finally connected I explained the issue to the woman taking the call and dutifully stated I wanted to speak to Falzone himself on the issue. I was assured he would get back with me... He never did.

I called back on two occasions over the next month wanting to discuss the issue. He was never available. Each time I left my number and asked for a return call. Never did Falzone return my call.

A few months later I ran into Falzone's father at the local Post Office in town. I asked his father to have Mark call me. I gave his father my number and was told he will be in touch with you. He never called.

It is important to note I do not know Mr. Falzone. Nor had I ever called his office before and I haven't since then.

Last month I was invited to attended a "Meet and Greet" with a man who is running against Falzone in the upcoming election. There I discovered a whole plethora of people in Falzone's district who have had similar incidents as mine. Time and time again people echoed exactly the same thing. He doesn't call people back. Notwithstanding the fact that Falzone is one the wrong side of two very important issues on the local and State level, the constant theme I heard time and time again was he does not return calls. Let alone the basic fact that he doesn't have a local Constituent Service office in town either.

For a Democracy to function it must have the participation by its citizens and interface with our elected Congressmen and Women. This is paramount for a Democracy. Unless of course your Mark Falzone. Continuants be damned. They simply are not worth calling back. And I am not alone it seems.

So Mark if your reading this it is too late to earn my vote. You lost it a few years ago. My support will be going to SEAN GRANT Sean Grant for State Representative in his bid to occupy your seat on Beacon Hill.

Today, regular CerebralWaste poster, Commanding Officer and good friend "THE COLONEL" has phoned Falzone's office on an issue he needs some help with. 100-1 odds he doesn't hear back from him either. Anyone want a piece of that action?

U.S. Ends 'Catch-And-Release' at Border

Nearly all non-Mexican illegal immigrants caught sneaking into the United States are being held until they can be returned to their home countries, the Bush administration said Wednesday.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said this marks the end of the so-called "catch-and-release" policy that for years helped illegal immigrants remain in the United States unhindered.

The new policy, dubbed "catch-and-detain" generally does not apply to Mexicans who are almost immediately returned to Mexico after being stopped by Border Patrol agents.
"Although we're not ready to declare victory _ we've got a lot more work to do _ it is encouraging and it is something that ought to inspire us to continue to push forward," Chertoff told reporters in Washington.

He credited the crackdown, aided this summer by National Guard troops, with deterring thousands of immigrants from trying to illegally enter the U.S. over the southwest border. Border Patrol data provided Wednesday shows a drop of about 20,000 illegal immigrants caught crossing from Mexico this summer, compared to last year.

AL GORE: How Green Is He?
Gore isn't quite as green as he's led the world to believe

Al Gore has spoken: The world must embrace a "carbon-neutral lifestyle." To do otherwise, he says, will result in a cataclysmic catastrophe. "Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb," warns the website for his film, An Inconvenient Truth. "We have just 10 years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tailspin."Graciously, Gore tells consumers how to change their lives to curb their carbon-gobbling ways: Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, use a clothesline, drive a hybrid, use renewable energy, dramatically cut back on consumption. Better still, responsible global citizens can follow Gore's example, because, as he readily points out in his speeches, he lives a "carbon-neutral lifestyle."

But if Al Gore is the world's role model for ecology, the planet is doomed.For someone who says the sky is falling, he does very little. He says he recycles and drives a hybrid. And he claims he uses renewable energy credits to offset the pollution he produces when using a private jet to promote his film. (In reality, Paramount Classics, the film's distributor, pays this.)

What Do You Think?

Public records reveal that as Gore lectures Americans on excessive consumption, he and his wife Tipper live in two properties: a 10,000-square-foot, 20-room, eight-bathroom home in Nashville, and a 4,000-square-foot home in Arlington, Va. (He also has a third home in Carthage, Tenn.) For someone rallying the planet to pursue a path of extreme personal sacrifice, Gore requires little from himself.Then there is the troubling matter of his energy use. In the Washington, D.C., area, utility companies offer wind energy as an alternative to traditional energy. In Nashville, similar programs exist. Utility customers must simply pay a few extra pennies per kilowatt hour, and they can continue living their carbon-neutral lifestyles knowing that they are supporting wind energy. Plenty of businesses and institutions have signed up. Even the Bush administration is using green energy for some federal office buildings, as are thousands of area residents.

But according to public records, there is no evidence that Gore has signed up to use green energy in either of his large residences. When contacted Wednesday, Gore's office confirmed as much but said the Gores were looking into making the switch at both homes. Talk about inconvenient truths.Gore is not alone. Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has said, "Global warming is happening, and it threatens our very existence." The DNC website applauds the fact that Gore has "tried to move people to act."

Yet, astoundingly, Gore's persuasive powers have failed to convince his own party: The DNC has not signed up to pay an additional two pennies a kilowatt hour to go green. For that matter, neither has the Republican National Committee.Maybe our very existence isn't threatened.Gore has held these apocalyptic views about the environment for some time. So why, then, didn't Gore dump his family's large stock holdings in Occidental (Oxy) Petroleum? As executor of his family's trust, over the years Gore has controlled hundreds of thousands of dollars in Oxy stock. Oxy has been mired in controversy over oil drilling in ecologically sensitive areas.Living carbon-neutral apparently doesn't mean living oil-stock free. Nor does it necessarily mean giving up a mining royalty either.Humanity might be "sitting on a ticking time bomb," but Gore's home in Carthage is sitting on a zinc mine.

Gore receives $20,000 a year in royalties from Pasminco Zinc, which operates a zinc concession on his property. Tennessee has cited the company for adding large quantities of barium, iron and zinc to the nearby Caney Fork River.The issue here is not simply Gore's hypocrisy; it's a question of credibility. If he genuinely believes the apocalyptic vision he has put forth and calls for radical changes in the way other people live, why hasn't he made any radical change in his life? Giving up the zinc mine or one of his homes is not asking much, given that he wants the rest of us to radically change our lives

Why Keep the Sign? A Question that Needs an Answer...

Down the street and to the left in a nearby town from where I sit a sign hangs on a building. Now that in itself isn't such a big thing or issue for that matter UNTIL you understand that the sign that is hanging is advertising for restaurant that isn't there anymore. To make matters even more confusing the sign I am referring too, hangs above a sign with the name of the current restaurant that is housed in the building. Follow me? I know it sounds like a convoluted soap opera but trust me this is happening.

If your in Wakefield and have ever eaten at TOODY'S you know what I am talking about. The current restaurant DETTORRE'S has somehow managed to keep the old TOODY's sign hanging on the building. WHY? Why would a new establishment even want to be associated with the old? Why have the sign still hanging at all? It seems to be a head scratcher for sure... Or is it? O the web we weave when we first try to deceive.....

The fact is Toody's is reopening down the street from it's old location. YEE HAW!!! The location that now houses DETTORRE'S. I had the distinct pleasure this morning to meet with Richie Canto and his son who are in the final stages of getting Toody's back up and running after a 1 year absence. Good news to say the least. A landmark is coming back to the area!

But back to the sign issue and the question du jour. WHY WOULD DETTORRE'S want a sign saying TOODY'S hanging from their building? Are the owners of Dettorre's unsure of its ability to attract and maintain customers with their food that they feel it necessary to cloud the issue? Why won't Dettorre's return the sign? Or at least take it down? It would certainly be a nice and sincere gesture of goodwill to see either option happen. Yet all attempts I am told to have this happen have been rebuffed. WHY? The logic of keeping the sign fails me and leads me back to the same question. WHY KEEP THE SIGN?

If anyone can come up with a plausible answer to this riddle wrap in an enigma I am all ears to coin a phrase.

Meanwhile I very pleased to announce that Richie Canto has agreed to step into the CerebralWaste Interview Hotseat and take the plunge! Look for this upcoming interview very soon!

Meeting the Owner of a Legend.....Toody's of Wakefield

Tomorrow 8-9-06 I will have the honor to meet the current owner of Toody's! Needless to say I am very excited about this AND about the prospect of getting Richard Canto to sit down in the "CerebralWaste Interview Hot Seat" (TM) for a deep look inside of the living restaurant legend that is Toody's.

Toody's is about to reopen and as you might have figured out by now I am looking forward to it in a BIG BIG kind of way!

Volunteering by CerebralWaste

In a recent study concerning volunteering, the study concluded with the following excuses as to why people don't volunteer. The excuses most often brought up are: "I cannot afford it" ,"I have no time", "I have no energy" and "I need that time for my personal use". Any of these excuses sound familiar to you? Come on be honest!

Almost everyone can volunteer and it is easer than you think. Volunteering is simply taking what you enjoy and using it in a manner to help other people. It could be a simple as while walking you pick up trash that has collected along the path you take or as complex as volunteering at a local hospital, animal shelter or group home. Volunteering is particularly helpful to men, urbanites, those with low income, people in poor health and retirees who don't work. It help provide people a sense of purpose and sense of well being. Still many don't or won't volunteer and use the excuses above as the reasons.

As an example I volunteer one morning a week at the local food bank in my hometown. It is a very rewarding experience helping those that need help. Like many I didn't think I had the time or energy at first, but now several months into my volunteering I find myself looking forward to the time being spent at the Food Bank. The Food Bank where I work serves almost 100 needy people a week. The 3 or so hours I spend there are very rewarding and as a result I am truly a better person for it as well.

This is backed up by a study from Cornell University, the study concluded that "Volunteering" will boost you self-esteem and energy and will give you a sense of mastery over your personal lives. Volunteering helps society in general because society gains when people help other people.

Still sadly most people don't seek out to do volunteer work. Volunteering should become more of a public issue and institutional support from government and business needs to be in place. Many businesses in the US give their employees time off to do volunteer work. These businesses have recognized that when people volunteer a sense of greater societal value and recognition are gained and it makes them better employees .Volunteering makes you feel good in helping those that need help.

Volunteering can also improve your resume/CV, by help you learn new skills by giving you "hands on" experience in a new capacity. Volunteering can and will boost your confidence and in general make you feel better about yourself. It can even give a foot in the door with a new employer. Positive results from a positive action.

If you are passionate about helping people and want to make a difference think of the single word volunteering. Look for ways in your community to make a difference and do it.

The Future is in Your Hands BAHRAIN

I really do not give two fils about a candidate's particular party affiliation. What I care about, is does the candidate on the WHOLE represent me, my values and the values of society.

I do not expect to agree 100 per cent with him or her. We are all human and it is OK to disagree with a belief or idea a candidate holds and still vote for him or her.

Still, unsurprisingly many people do not feel this way.
Yes, there are a few topics that are potential deal breakers for my vote. Just as everyone else, I have beliefs that I hold firm to. But I try not to lose sight of the big picture. The picture we all, no matter where we live have, that shapes and molds our countries.

The right to vote is a precious one and one that should be taken very seriously by all. Every vote counts. Just ask Al Gore and Senator John Kerry. Both learned the hard way this very important fact.

As time passes, change in our beliefs is an inevitable part of life. What you believed and thought at 18 may very well not be the case when you are 36, married and have children.

When you buy a home, you may very well change your thought process in accordance with the politics of the day as well. You have then entered into the realm of having a substantial asset to protect.
Sadly, everywhere elections are held, many people will blindly follow a party line. When in fact, quite often that line is not in the best interest of the person voting or in the best interest of society.
Still, like obedient sheep, they blindly shuffle to the polls and cast a ballot for someone who does not truly represent their best interest. Painful but true. It is the same the world over. From Boston to Bahrain, people will cast their ballots for someone based on one premise .

With just a few months to election time in Bahrain, take some time and research the people you are thinking about voting for.Ask yourself does this person standing for office, represent me and what I believe ? Does the person standing for office have the best interest in his or her heart for the job?

Ask yourself what have they done in office for the good of the community. Or do they tend to posture and blow a lot of hot air ? As we all know, politicians are good at posturing and blowing hot air. That is the one common trait they all have!

For a Democracy to properly function the people must participate and do their part.
VOTE and VOTE wisely ! In the end it is you, the voter who is responsible for those that are elected.

New Greenhouse Up and Running!

I am proud to announce the acquisition AND INSTALLATION of Greenhouse #2. This new growing forum will allow me to fully and further expand the business as I need too.

After careful research I determined that I wanted a Sunglo Greenhouse. In my opinion, Sunglo has by far the best value for the money and I choose "The Expert" model. The greenhouse has been installed and the first cuttings have taken root and been sold. Within a year I expect to nearly double the number of plants grown and rooted to well over 9000. Not bad for a one man show!

It is so enjoyable getting up early in the morning and heading out to the greenhouse and checking my babies. Even more enjoyable when those babies are turned into to cold hard CASH!

So when I am not answering customer based emails or otherwise surfing the web, you can almost bet I am out working in my over grown "Club House" as my wife calls it. I agree. The big difference is this "CLUB HOUSE" is a CASH machine. Of course I have piped in Cable TV and a small FRIDGE stocked with my favorite amber colored beverages.

One of the biggest in terms of numbers that I propagate are Bouganvilliea. The parent plants just happen to be from Bahrain. Now if only I could propagate SHAWARMA!!! MMMM SHAWARMA. MMMMM

TOODY'S IS COMING BACK TO WAKEFIELD!

Several months ago I posted this.. Concerning my experience at the restaurant that took over when Toody's sold out. The response I got varied from the sublime to the raving rants of pubescent teenagers all lathered up with hormonal sweat of what "Hot and Sexy" Wakefield football player worked there. Like anyone besides local High School teenagers would or should care. I want good food. Period... End of discussion!

Yes it is true....TOODY'S is making a comeback in Wakefield. The old Daddy's Donuts in Wakefield, just before or after the Rail Road tracks (depending on your heading!) has a sign stating it is to become the FUTURE HOME of the reborn TOODY'S!! My prayers have been answered.. GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! Even better there will now be PARKING!!!!

This news is wonderful to say the least and lets loose a much deserved smack in the face to the people who bought out the original Toody's to begin with. And boy did they try hard to destroy what 50 plus years of good food and service created!

If anyone know when the official GRAND OPENING is going to be please let me know. I want to be one of the FIRST in line! I would also like to interview someone from Toody's on what it is like have a LANDMARK resturant rise from the ashes like a PHOENIX. I can taste the meatballs and sauce right now...... Please hurry and get the dors open!

CW Interviews.... BAHRAINI RANTS!
When push comes to shove as it often does and you need a good laugh, few sites can match Bahraini Rants! Quick witted and filled with humour BR can let loose with the best of them. A quick look at his tag line says it all.. "I RANT YOU RISTEN" sums it up and just about says it all about BR. Don't belive me? Take a look yourself!

No topic seems to be off limits with him as well. June of 2006 marked the 2 year anniversary of his blog and topics have ranged from enticing short stories to comical rants on the most serious of issues. Heck BR had the foresight to pick this years World Cup winner. If only I would have taken his advice I could have been RICH on that one! Who could argue with that kind of forsight?

Without a doubt his blog should be on everybody's daily visit list. And don't stop there. Sort through the archives as well. You won't be disappointed! His patented Vocabulario posts are a great way to get the gray matter between the ears stimulated to a degree that will get you thinking and make you smarter as well. There is something for everyone on his blog. I guarantee it!

So when I asked Bahraini Rants if he would agree to sit down and down an interview first comment was "Well it's about bleepin' time you asked!" So he agreed eagerly to step into the "Cerebral Waste Interview Hotseat" (tm) and fire back what I shot at him. I hope you enjoy it!

Unconventional Bahraini, involved with an amazing bit of amazing, loves cheeseburgers, trouble, and can keep excellent company. If you were my friend and wanted to say something nice, you'd say I'm a self-centered music junkie with a penchant for bands you've never heard of.. People that know me well, know that I have random conversations with myself, keep lists of everything, and can be a glutton at times with food.. and if you want to get into my pants, a box of "After Eight Chocolates"..

What professional field are you working in right now in Bahrain?

I'm currently a suit…

Did you have a hard time adjusting to life in the US? Or had you been in the US prior to going to University?

Actually the only problem I had to deal with in terms of adjusting was getting over the depression you'd get from the colder months.. I had one winter in particular in which I just couldn't cope with very little sunlight.. It's funny how important sunlight is to us, reminds me of Birdman and how the power of the sun was the only thing that kept him going, in a way, we were all birdmen, or birdpersons for that matter, I should just stop now shouldn't I?

What do you miss about Boston? Any plans to return soon? I have Patriots tickets you know!

Boston was a great city to live in.. There are a lot of things I miss about that city.. but I think if I had to name a few: Empandas from pizza ring, the enormous room in Central Square, quiet movie theatres in the suburbs, the "Improper Bostonian" newpaper, liquor stores that had bars on the windows, bookstores, summer grilling, the abundance of crack addicts and bums on my morning walk to work, the steak at the Franklin Café, Science Museum, walking around, Memorial Drive on a Sunday, bottega fiorentina, Harvard Square, road trips… plans to return? Someday I'm sure..

I know you follow The Boston Red Sox and The New England Patriots. How do you feel these teams are going to perform this season?

I don't really know much about the Pats anymore, the games are shown so late over here that I can't get into a football game at 12AM till 4 on a work night.. I still read up about them and hope they do well though.. I do still follow the Red Sox though.. Over the years, the main thing I've learned from being a red sox fan is that they scrape through the season, they make it to the playoffs, and then they break your heart, every season.. this season has started off on the right foot, the team looks solid and I feel that they've made some good trades. The management has made some excellent tactical changes and slashing down on the egos a bit.. I'm not holding my breath though..

Who are your favorite players on the Sox and Pats? Do you think the Pats and the SOX have a good chance at going all the way to the "Big Dance" this year?

I'll skip the gridiron question.. As for the sox,, I'm excited about Papelbon and how well he's maturing, Beckett's also one I've got high hopes for.. Big Papi has been our savoir this season.. and Mani is just a big big player, over 2,000 hits now? Amazing.. Jason Varitek has always been their pillar, or was the goatee the pillar?? We'll never know.. Youklis and Loretta have been consistent for us as well, Loretta's surprised me.. Will the Sox go all the way?? In order to avoid disappointment, I'm going to say no comment..

Do you follow the New England Revolution Soccer (Football) team at all?

The truth… no, I think the MLS is pathetic,, the fact that they changed the rules of the game to appeal to the American public is horrible and shows disdain for the game.. I believe they need to spend more money in promoting football.. The Ertugun brothers did everything they could to get the NASL going in the 1970s and funded the New York Cosmos (bringing players like Pele, Neeskens, and Beckenbauer), the MLS needs some football mad owners to get involved and bring more attention to the game..

What team is going to win the WORLD CUP?

Since this is a dated question, I'll just take a moment here and say that I was supporting Italy from the start.. I even won the office bragging rights pool..

Your have written often on your blog about music and your musical taste is quite varied? What are some of the bands or musicians you listen too?

Well I've got hurricane by Bob Dylan stuck in my head right now.. I'm currently stuck on this contemporary indie rock thing that I haven't been able to shake off, but it's a whole broad spectrum of stuff that I listen to.. I've been listening to dirty pretty things (Libertines without Pete Doherty, excellent), Hard-Fi, Gnarls Barkley, a house mix from this nightclub in New York city, and the Glen Miller Orchestra (all over the place I know)..

Do you play any instruments yourself? Or are you just an iPOD addict?

I would say I'm a laughable guitar player that needs to practice his scales.. I do write the funny lyrics when we jam though.. I also play a mean Caracas, and electric cowbell.. one of my resolutions for 2006 (that I've failed miserably) was to take piano lessons.. since we've got a piano at home I thought I'd make some use of it.. Daydreams of being the Bahraini Thelonious Monk got me to contacting some piano instructors.. Telling them you're a twentysomething lad looking for a private piano tutor didn't go down too well, they thought I was some pervert or something who lures unsuspecting piano teachers to his den of filth and then proceeds to seduce them as he practices playing "chopsticks" in the buff..

What prompted you to start blogging? Were you influenced by anyone in particular?

I started blogging because I needed a release for the voices in my head.. Not many people know this little bit of Bahraini blogging trivia, but Mahmood of Mahmood.tv fame got his first idea of blogging from me.. we were sitting down and I said, "Mak (I call him mak).. you need to do something with your free time, have you ever heard of this new phenomenon called blogging? I'm thinking of trying it out" and just like Neil Armstrong beat Buzz Aldrin to walking on the moon.. mahmood beat me to blogging, swiping me of my rightful title of the godfather of bahraini blogging... The first blog I actually got really addicted to was "Where is Raed" by Salam Pax.. I started reading it religiously in 2002, finding out about life in Iraq before the war.. Whenever he went missing and wouldn't post for a couple of days, we'd (his readers) all get worried fearing the worst.. being able to read about what was happening in Iraq at the time, during the war and the aftermath without the spin that the media put on it was incredible.. Salam's now moved to bigger and better things and has signed a book deal..

Do you go through any particular process prior to posting? Or are your posts more spontaneous in nature?

I don't really have a set format in which the posts are published.. sometimes I write and then save and close to come back to at another time, other times I just write something real quick and post.. no real format.. I do have an inner circle of first press readers who tell me whether the post is fine or stupid or whatever..

How would you categorize yourself in the Bahraini blogging world?

I'm a nobody in the realm of Bahraini blogging.. nobody loves me.. nobody comments, nobody links to me.. I'm suffering from a case of "poor me" can you tell?

Have you ever considered blogging in Arabic or doing a "Mirror Blog" of your own?

I don't think my ramblings would come out right in Arabic… instead of just misunderstood eccentricity, I think people would think I'm certifiably insane..

Are you close to any of the other Bahraini bloggers?

I've been taken off so many blogger emailing groups and stuff, I don't think they like me too much…

Do you have any big plans to expand your blog?

If I can bother to get off my lazy ass and find someone who'll help me, yes.. otherwise, maybe..

I had the privilege of attending one of the "Bahraini Blogger Meetup's" when I was back in Bahrain and I had a wonderful time. Have you attended any of these "Meetup's"? Did you come away from it like I did with a stronger appreciation of the power of the blogging world like I did?

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to attend the blogger meetups, mainly due to timing issues.. to be Frank, Shirley, blogging in bahrain has become a little stale with the hype having died down and updates becoming less frequent.. Everything started so strong with regular posts and interesting points of view, and now, we're left with a graveyard of dead blogs.. Personally, I feel that in order for blogging to survive, it's gotta have a purpose and be well defined (that's why my blog stinks). If you want to blog about politics, then you need to be at every single Parliament session, you need to keep everything focused on politics. If you want to post pictures about life in Bahrain, then focus your blog on pictures. If it's shawarma stands you'd like to rate, then make it the Bahraini shawarma blog.. (just remember I started it here first)..

You have posted some very well written pieces on your blog. Including that wonderful beginning to what could be called a short story or perhaps a full fledged book. Have you considered expanding on your talents and look deeper into writing as a career?

Thank you for your comments on some of my posts (the check is in the mail like we talked about).. do I consider myself a writer? That short story I wrote was just a brain fart lingering around a little too much.. I'd love to eventually write something epic, but until I find the time to do, you're going to have to bear with me..

How do you feel about the current political and economic reforms that are taking place in Bahrain? Mark, you know I don't do politics.. I'm hopeful and optimistic, much to the chagrin of my colleagues.

What is one thing the US could do to help the current situation in the Middle East?

The US could go into a period of splendid isolationism like it did in the 20s and teach the rest of the world a lesson about globalization and how everyone needs everyone else, and then come back and we can all be one happy family... just a thought..

And the single most important question. What is you favorite shawarma place on the Island?

I don't really have a favourite shawarma place in Bahrain.. if I had to choose the popular choice it would have to be Burgerland.. funny isn't it? The best shawarma place comes from a place named after burgers.. that's like me saying the best tofu vegan sandwich comes from bobs butchered burger shack.. well not really like it.. but close enough.. Actually the best shawarma in Manama right across from Awal Cinema, can't remember what it's called, but they have great shawarma.. I think a shawarma blog would be a good idea.. (ed's note... ME TOO!)

Why GMAIL SUCKS...

I HATE SPAM! Detest it. Show me a spammer and I will be happy to flogg him or her. Email means business for me and business is my life blood. SPAM with GMAIL is out of control.

(On the bright side Ali NO MORE GMAIL SPAM MESSAGES for you!)

Couple that fact, with my little used Gmail account that receives close to 2000 spam emails a MONTH. Pleas for help with the asswipes at GMAIL have failed to even generate a response let alone a canned one. For all of Google's MIGHT the mighty will fall if they don't take care of the customer. A very simple rule, yet one so often overlooked.

2000 emails a month roughly translates to over 66 per day. Simple math for those who can't handle it! Granted most do wind up in the so called "SPAM FOLDER" but still the volume is out of control and GMAIL is doing SQUAT about it.

I had hoped to slowly transfer my email usage over to GMAIL and DUMP AO HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL. Alas GMAIL makes AOL look good when compared to the sheer volume of SPAM.

Has anyone else experianced this much SPAM with GMAIL?

This week while I was watching The World Cup, Ro and I were discussing life and death.

I told her point blank, "Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug."

WHAT THE ARAB WORLD THINKS
Torture is accepted and even expected in the Arab world. Yes, I know what you're thinking - that's not politically correct in most mainstream media. And you know some nice Arabs who have immigrated to America. But it's the truth in the Arab world. Might makes right. Real men don't eat quiche. They prove their manhood by the way they treat their enemy. After all it's what Muhammad did to the unbelievers - Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians in the Quoran - the 'holy book' allegedly mishandled in Guantanamo prison.

Arab Muslim men gain honor by shaming, belittling, abusing and torturing their enemy in the most horrific ways. Just look at how the Palestinians treat so-called collaborators by disemboweling them and hanging them upside down in Manger Square in Bethlehem. Look at the terrorist torture chambers that the coalition forces recently uncovered in Iraq.

When people refer to the prisons of Saddam Hussein and his regime they think he is the extreme exception. Not! The truth is his torture tactics are quite the norm in the Arab world.
If you want to see torture that is beyond what any Westerner can ever imagine please go to IMPALEMENT. Yes, you read it right, impalement. You'll get a glimpse of what the Arabs do to their own people.

As someone who came from the Arab world and knows how they think, it frustrates me to see self-appointed righteous minded politicians and media pundits - oblivious to Arabic culture and thinking - criticizing America's actions at Guantanamo. These are a bunch of al Qaeda jihadists who were captured while bent on killing us - the kaffirs or unbelievers. They laugh watching our government bend over backwards, forwards and sideways trying to appease the critics. The more we stumble over ourselves questioning our goals and tactics, the more they think we are weak and easy to defeat.

They smirk because they believe that Americans have demonstrated how stupid and weak they are by caving in to stories about maltreatment of Guantanamo detainees. They are watching our critics in this country and counting on them to embolden the radical Islamic cause and weaken our resolve.

Actually, Gitmo is a joke as far as the Arabs are concerned. Prison? You call that a prison? Let me tell you what some of the prisoners call Guantanamo, “Al muntazah al-dini lilmujaheden al Muslimin,” The Religious Resort for Islamic Militants. They are given three halal meals a day in accordance to their religious dictates. How many kosher prisons are there in the Arabic world? None. Jews captured in the Arab world are butchered like those obscene pictures taken in Ramallah during the frenzied slaughter of two Israeli reservists who got lost. Remember the Palestinian man holding his red, Jewish blood dripping hands, high above his head in victory? Remember Nick Berg's head being held high also?

Most of these detainees never had three meals a day in their entire life. They are gaining weight, and are living in what they refer to in Arabic as “Al-Jannah,” paradise. They have radio, television, soccer games, air-conditioning, clean clothes, and “servants” - meaning American GIs who wait on them hand and foot. They have Islamic chaplains and are handed Qu'rans, the social hate guide against Infidels, by people so concerned as not to offend that they wear latex gloves and carry the book with two hands.

Many Muslims in the Middle East would gladly give up their poverty, dictatorial governments, corrupt leaders and social bondage to enjoy the relative luxuries Guantanamo offers. They have free medical care - better than millions of uninsured Americans and our military men and women serving on the jihadists' battlefield. Some of them who couldn't afford to see an optometrist now have glasses and can see and read their Qu'ran. Others who never had the opportunity to see a dentist now have a free dental plan. It has become such a joke; we even stop interrogations to let them take prayer breaks demanded by their religion.

As an Arab, I can tell you that Illinois Democratic Senator Richard Durbin is aiding and abetting the goals and strategy of Islamic jihadists who have declared war on the United States.
Where was Durbin's comparison to the Nazis when we found the torture chambers in Iraq?Where was Durbin's comparison to Soviet gulags when we found the hundreds of thousands of bodies in Saddam's mass graves?

Where was Durbin's head when he compared prisoners captured on the field of battle to the internment of Japanese American civilians during WWII? OK, apologize to unarmed citizens, not fighters with weapons in their hands.Where was Durbin when he compared Gitmo and Abu Ghraib to the industry of death that murdered 6 million Jewish men, women and children during WWII?If anything, his heart and mind were in the jihadists terrorists' camp.
If you see what story is being downloaded and shared by viewers of the al Jazeera web site you will find the story on Durbin's comments the winner.

If I were an Islamic terrorist I would be thanking Durbin and forwarding his views to all my fellow fanatics. His reckless comments fuel the fanatic frenzied jihadists, motivating them to blow themselves up in the midst of innocent civilians, savagely cut the heads of helpless hostages and devote themselves to killing the infidel who could be your neighbor stationed in Iraq. Just like the Quran says they should.

Dick Durbin was an unwitting champion of Islamic radical fundamentalists. His comments should be known from this day forward as a “Durbinization” of the facts. To demonize something grossly out of proportion to what the enemy is doing is to Durbinize. Gitmo and Abu Ghraib have been Durbinized and the Arab world loved it. They laughed at Durbin because he was supporting their belief in the destruction of our country and civilization.

The shame is Durbin didn't have a clue as to what he'd done. As far as he was concerned, he did the right thing for the Islamic radical detainees living high on the proverbial hog in Gitmo. What he really did was make them laugh. Laugh at us for being fools and not real men. NOTE:I found this to be a very interesting and fascinating article by a woman who is writing from her own personal experience. I do think she paints the picture harsher in some instances than it is, but those are her words, not mine.

My intent in publishing this is not to paint Arab Muslims as "barbaric" or "uncivilized". Rather the opposite. That despite all the horrors they have been forced to live and work in they remain some of the nicest and sincere people I know. Instead of leaving their homelands, they stay. They stay in hopes of making their respective nations better. They, like 99.9999999 percent of all other Arabs want and desire for the same things we want. They want a family. A home and peace among all Nations.

I hope that some from the Arab world will read this and post their thoughts and reactions. I am sure that many have probably already seen this before. To me it is new, and despite my connection as an American who has spent some time in the region, this article filled in a few gaps in my mind and in an odd manner gave me a renewed sense of respect for my Arab friends. Apple faces the music as public discord with iPod grows

IT IS the gadget that no fashion-conscious bright young thing can afford to be seen without. But two years after Britain fell in love with the iPod there are signs that the pocket-sized box that transformed the way millions listen to music is beginning to lose its shine.

Internet chatrooms are carrying accounts of "unreliable machines", while questions are being asked about working conditions in the Chinese factories where they are made. The "very significant" fall in public confidence is highlighted in new figures from YouGov's brand awareness index, which show a steady fall in the popularity of the Apple brand. More than 50 million have been sold since its launch in 2001, and the company insists that the quality of its products is not an issue, with the iPod remaining the most popular portable music player.

However, Apple's share price fell to an eight-month low last week after an analyst predicted that the launch of several new models would be delayed.

Sundip Chahal, of YouGov's BrandIndex team, said: "The overall brand index is showing a definite downward trend up to the beginning of April. The index for quality is going down - from a rating in the high 30s in October to the mid 20s, which is a very significant drop." The gadget's fall in popularity could be linked to bad publicity. Shortly after the launch of its iPod Nano last year, Apple admitted that some models had faulty screens that scratched too easily.
There have also been complaints on Apple's internet chatroom about the iPod Shuffle, its smallest and only music player without a screen.

YouGov claims that the decline in the brand's reputation may be a consequence of the company's early dominance in the MP3 player market. "Apple used to stand for corporate reputation and quality, and people were prepared to pay more because they got it back in quality," Chahal said.

However, Apple denies that it has a problem with quality. Greg Joswiak, vice-president of iPod marketing, said the company had a first-year failure rate of 5%. He said: "A lot of products don't enjoy such a low failure rate - mobile phones can be up to 30%. The vast majority of customers are extremely happy and have never experienced a failure. "Most problems are caused by mishandling. They are complex electronic components and they can be broken if dropped or mishandled."

Apple needs to learn a lesson that SONY learned very painfully in the 80's. Proprietary items rarely succeed past the initial phase of public curiosity. Sony if you remembered had a great product in the early late 70's early early 80's with the BETA MAX player. It was vastly superior to VHS but SONY would not license the technology to other firms. They choose to hold the patent and reap the rewards. They failed. Even with the movie studio backing they had. VHS on the other hand offered nearly everything BETA MAX did as far as functionality. In the long run Sony lost millions trying to hoard the market as well as consumer confidence.

The iPOD has more or less been a cash cow for Apple and its sole financial life raft. Without the iPOD Apple would have been in bad shape. The company in my mind is too dependant on this one product. Their stock price is showing it as well.

Don't get me wrong I like Apple computers and had been strongly considering buying a laptop from them and would have if the deal of a century hadn't come along.

Wake up Apple and get with program. License out the technology and open up iTunes to other users of MP3's and reap the rewards. In the long run you will be a better company for it. ~CW~

Accidental grenade explosion kills two Palestinians

Two Palestinians were killed and another seven, including a baby, wounded when a grenade accidentally exploded in the southern Gaza Strip.
Family members were playing with a grenade in the town of Khan Yunis when it exploded, killing 23-year-old Qassem Massud and his one-year-old niece, medical and security sources said Wednesday.
All the casualties were members of the same family.

A female "Pinko Democrat" wrote a series of letters to the White House constantly complaining about the treatment of captive insurgents(i.e.terrorists) being held in Guantanamo Bay. She received back the following reply:

Dear Concerned Citizen,

Thank you for your recent letter roundly criticizing our treatment of the Taliban and Al Quaeda detainees currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The administration takes these matters seriously and your opinion was heard loud and clear here in Washington.

You'll be pleased to learn that, thanks to the concerns of citizens like yourself, we are creating a new division of the Terrorist Retraining Program, to be called the "PINKO'S Accept Responsibility for Killers" program, or PARK for short.

In accordance with the guidelines of this new program, we have decided to place one terrorist under your personal care. Your personal detainee has been selected and scheduled for transportation under heavily armed guard to your residence next Monday.

Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mohamed (you can just call him Ahmed) is to be cared for pursuant to the standards as you personally demanded in your letter of complaint. It will likely be necessary for you to hire some assistant caretakers.

We will conduct weekly inspections to ensure that your standards of care for Ahmed are commensurate with those you so strongly recommended in your letter.

Although Ahmed is a sociopath and extremely violent, we hope that your sensitivity to what you described as his "attitudinal problem" will help him overcome these character flaws. Perhaps you are correct in describing these problems as mere cultural differences. We understand that you plan to offer counseling and home schooling. Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers. We advise that you do not ask him to demonstrate these skills at your next yoga group. He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless (in your opinion) this might offend him.

Ahmed will not wish to interact with you or your daughters (except sexually), since he views females as a subhuman form of property. This is a particularly sensitive subject for him and he has been known to show violent tendencies around women who fail to comply with the new dress code that he will recommend as more appropriate attire. I'm sure you will come to enjoy the anonymity offered by the burka -- over time.

Just remember that it is all part of "respecting his culture and his religious beliefs" -- wasn't that how you put it? Thanks again for your letter We truly appreciate it when folks like you keep us informed of the proper way to do our job. You take good care of Ahmed - and remember..we'll be watching.

Hundreds of chemical weapons found in Iraq: US intelligence

US-led coalition forces in Iraq have found some 500 chemical weapons since the March 2003 invasion, Republican lawmakers said, citing an intelligence report.

"Since 2003, Coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent," said an overview of the report unveiled by Senator Rick Santorum and Peter Hoekstra, head of the intelligence committee of the House of Representatives.

"Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq's pre-Gulf war chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf war chemical munitions are assessed to still exist," it says. The lawmakers cited the report as validation of the US rationale for the war, and stressed the ongoing danger they pose.

"This is an incredibly -- in my mind -- significant finding. The idea that, as my colleagues have repeatedly said in this debate on the other side of the aisle, that there are no weapons of mass destruction, is in fact false," Santorum said.

A Pentagon official who confirmed the findings said that all the weapons were pre-1991 vintage munitions "in such a degraded state they couldn't be used for what they are designed for."

The official, who asked not to be identified, said most were 155 millimeter artillery projectiles with mustard gas or sarin of varying degrees of potency. "We're destroying them where we find them in the normal manner," the official said.

In 2004, the US army said it had found a shell containing sarin gas and another shell containing mustard gas, and a Pentagon official said at the time the discovery showed there were likely more.

The intelligence overview published Wednesday stressed that the pre-Gulf War Iraqi chemical weapons could be sold on the black market. "Use of these weapons by terrorists or insurgent groups would have implications for coalition forces in Iraq. The possibility of use outside Iraq cannot be ruled out," it said.

Santorum said the two-month-old report was prepared by the National Ground Intelligence Center, a military intelligence agency that started looking for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq when the Iraq Survey Group stopped doing so in late 2004.

Last year the head of Iraq Survey Group, Charles Duelfer, said that insurgents in Iraq had already used old chemical weapons in their attacks. Nevertheless, "the impression that the Iraqi Survey Group left with the American people was they didn't find anything," Hoekstra said.

"But this says: Weapons have been discovered; more weapons exist. And they state that Iraq was not a WMD-free zone, that there are continuing threats from the materials that are or may still be in Iraq," he said. Asked just how dangerous the weapons are, Hoekstra said: "One or two of these shells, the materials inside of these, transferred outside of the country, can be very, very deadly."

The report said that the purity of the chemical agents -- and thus their potency -- depends on "many factors, including the manufacturing process, potential additives, and environmental storage conditions." "While agents degrade over time, chemical warfare agents remain hazardous and potentially lethal," it said.

Reporters questioned the lawmakers as to why the Bush administration had not played up the report to boost their case for continued warfare in Iraq.

"The administration has been very clear that they want to look forward," Santorum said. "They felt it was not their role to go back and fight previous discussions." Fear that Saddam Hussein might use his alleged arsenal of chemical and biological weapons was a reason US officials gave for launching the March 2003 invasion of Iraq.
